Our Thoughts on TW2: The ever-popular MMO-RTS is back and it's looking better than ever

Rise to the Challenge

What would you do if you were given a fairly standard-looking settlement that came with a modest plot of land in a war-torn area of the medieval countryside? Well, aside from wondering who it was that sneakily invented the time machine and allowed you to use it without your knowledge, or why indeed you're suddenly in a time that doesn't even have Netflix, the television to watch it on or indeed the concept of television in the first place, you'd likely take up the challenge, wouldn't you? You would if you were in the Tribal Wars world, and now you can do so in more detail and with a better interface than ever before. Tribal Wars' success is utterly undeniable, and I introduce the evidence for this: Tribal Wars 2.

The original Tribal Wars was quite the success. A massively multiplayer online game, it allowed you to assume control of a modest settlement and be in charge of its growth from modest to massive, establishing yourself in the online Tribal Wars world as a settlement with serious resources, adequate defense, and a nice castle sat right in the middle of it all. This is almost verbatim the description that could be used in reference to Tribal Wars 2 (as well as the developers' other titles like Grepolis), only this time around developers Innogames have seriously improved the look and the feel of the whole experience.

Starting Out

Simply put for those that aren't familiar with the series, Tribal Wars 2 involves building up a settlement from its initially weak state into one that has resource production buildings, strong defences, an army, and the respect of the surrounding settlements owned by other real-life players. At the outset you are guided through the basics with a simple tutorial. This shows you how to attain resources such as timber and iron, various quantities of which are required for building important structures in your settlement. A barracks is just one example of such buildings, as is a farm that allows you to produce animals and food for your settlement.

As is the case in the original Tribal Wars, you can produce raw materials such as wood and store them in warehouses, effectively increasing the rate of production and the quantity you can store: this task epitomises the style of the game. Tribal Wars 2 is all about progression from modest to formidable, and to get there you must spend time upgrading your resource production/storage buildings as well as have enough food to feed your settlement. Only when you've established a solid infrastructure can you then seriously consider the other important aspect of the game: defense.

Kill or Be Killed

Tribal Wars 2: Prepare Your Armies & Smash Your Opponents

Prepare Your Armies & Smash Your Opponents.

The original Tribal Wars was notorious for the amount of attention that had to be paid to the gameplay if you were to stand a chance against other settlements. After the initial grace period, your settlement's sovereignty can be challenged, and this can be problematic if you haven't got decent fortifications and at least a competent army. As you upgrade your barracks you are able to produce more formidable troops, starting with simple defensive units like spearmen and eventually churning out archers, skilled swordsmen, catapults, and many more. Again, the system of upgrade and improvement reigns supreme, and in turn allows you to reign even more supremely over your settlement.

The strategic element comes into play when sending units into battle, either through PvP (player vs. player) battles or against the game's AI. In either case, you can initially get away with going for sheer might over strategy, but the more you play the game the more you will realise that battles, which are fought automatically based largely on the stats of the respective settlements' troops and other factors, require careful troop selection and placement, It's useless sending a few archers against serious cavalry  for example, so you need better units in order to deal with more formidable enemies.

A New Era

Originally of this series I would have said that games like Forge of Empires were far superior in terms of graphics and general gameplay, but Tribal Wars 2 has arrived with its significantly improved visuals to break to the front of the MMO pack. Battles are still fought on a statistical basis however with no visual representation of the battle unfolding dynamically in front of you, a feature that perhaps needs to be addressed should Tribal Wars 3 ever exist in the future. Still, Tribal Wars 2 is a drastically improved version of its predecessor offering a slicker interface, better graphics, and enough new content to please long-term fans of the game.
